Israeli threats stiffen Iran's resolve

Post by yunowu on Thu Jun 26, 2008 3:12 pm

Israel, by escalating threats against Iran precisely at a time when major nations are pushing the arch of diplomacy toward Tehran, has made it nearly impossible for Iran to show a great deal of flexibility in negotiations over its nuclear program. As for an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, it would likely spur, not deter, any Iranian notions of proliferation. - Kaveh L Afrasiabi (Jun 26, '08)

Training to attack Iran

Post by yunowu on Thu Jun 26, 2008 3:13 pm

The leaked news that the Israeli air force recently conducted what appeared to be a rehearsal for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities caused something of a sensation in capitals around the world. Not in Israel, though, where the thinking is, if all options against Iran are on the table, then it's best to prepare to execute them. (Jun 26, '08)

By VOA News
25 June 2008

Iran is strongly criticizing Britain for lifting restrictions on an Iranian opposition group previously banned as a terrorist organization.

The group involved, known as the People's Mujahedeen of Iran, or the Mujahedin-e Khalq, is banned as a terrorist group by the United States, the European Union, Iraq, Iran and others....

Tension over Iran threatens Bahrain

Post by yunowu on Sat Jun 28, 2008 7:00 am

Published Date: June 26, 2008
LONDON: International tension over Iran poses a serious threat to Bahrain's security and the Gulf kingdom wants its allies to give it early warning of any planned escalation, its public security chief said yesterday. Major General Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani was apparently referring to the possibility of US military action against Tehran's nuclear program. "The level of tension currently concerning Iran is a further significant threat," he said in a speech in London to the Royal United Services Institute, a security think-tank.....

'Weak' Iran ripe to be attacked

Post by yunowu on Tue Jul 01, 2008 3:10 pm

Jul 2, 2008

By Gareth Porter

WASHINGTON - New arguments by analysts close to Israeli thinking in favor of United States strikes against Iran cite evidence of Iranian military weakness in relation to the US and Israel, and even raise doubts that Iran is rushing to obtain such weapons at all.

The new arguments contradict Israel's official argument that it faces an "existential threat" from an Islamic extremist Iranian regime determined to get nuclear weapons. They suggest that Israel, which already has as many as 200 nuclear weapons, views Iran from the position of the dominant power in the region rather than as the weaker state in the relationship....

Tehran puts on a show of strength

Post by yunowu on Tue Jul 01, 2008 3:12 pm

An Iranian general warns that work has already started on digging 320,000 graves for American soldiers should they fight in Iran. This can be dismissed as just another salvo in the psychological warfare between Tehran and Washington. But should the United States find a pretext - such as Iran being goaded into blockading the Strait of Hormuz - and the real bullets start flying, Iran can be expected to be prepared. - Sami Moubayed (Jul 1, '08)

Does Iran have Bush over a barrel?

Post by yunowu on Tue Jul 01, 2008 3:16 pm

Last month's US$11 one-day spike in oil prices is the most spectacular suggestion yet of a relationship between threats against Iran and the price of oil. With three out of four voters in the United States saying gas prices will be "very important" in deciding who they vote for in November's presidential elections, this could be a deciding factor in the George W Bush administration taking an attack on Iran "off the table". - Jim Lobe (Jul 1, '08)

Post by yunowu on Tue Jul 01, 2008 10:43 pm

Wednesday, 02 July 2008 NEW YORK -- Iran's foreign minister expressed optimism that
negotiations could begin with the international community over Tehran's
nuclear program, saying that his government is "carefully examining" a
package of economic incentives offered last month by the U.S. and its
negotiating partners and that Iran would respond "within weeks." Iran's top diplomat, Manouchehr Mottaki, steered away from Tehran's
long-held negotiating position on its nuclear program by refusing to
rule out the possibility that Iran might freeze its uranium-enrichment
work while negotiations took place....
