Zebari called on Iraq’s neighboring countries to respect their commitments and support Iraq’s security as well as not to interfere in the country’s internal affairs. Iraqi FM stressed Iraq’s attachment to the goals and principles of the non-aligned movement urging the movement’s members to support Iraqi Government and consolidate with the Iraqi people in pursuit of peace and justice. He emphasized as well the necessity to modernize the non-aligned movement and upgrade its goals and work mechanisms in line with major developments in international power balances and economic globalization.

In a special statement to the Iranian Al Alam TV Channel, Zebari affirmed that Baghdad is keen on preserving Iraq’s sovereignty by removing Iraq from United Nations Chapter VII and reaching a security pact in virtue of which the Iraqi government’s power is the only power in the country while the presence of foreign forces in Iraq would be organized legally. He added that Iraq has proved a major point in the agreement stipulating that Iraq’s territories cannot be used for any attack against neighboring countries noting that Iraq defines deployment locations of US Forces while stressing that they are not military bases. He noted that the timetable discussed currently with the US is of a year or two years.
As for tripartite talks between Iraq, Iran and the United States, Zebari announced that the three rounds of talks carried out till the moment have reduced fears between the three parties but were interrupted on account of lack of confidence between two of these three parties. In regards of Iranian-Iraqi relations, Zebari said that bilateral relations are historical, confirming Iraq’s keenness to develop these relations in all fields calling on Iran to help Iraq ascertain security which will contribute to Iran’s stability.
