The International Monetary Fund said Tuesday the current boom in fuel and food prices, the biggest commodity price gain in 30 years, is having an uneven impact and is hurting the world's poorest countries most. VOA's Barry Wood reports....

Eighteen African countries are hardest hit, with the worst impact being felt in Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Togo, Comoros, Malawi and Guinea....

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says the number of hungry people
in the world increased by about 50 million last year due to high food
prices....
The FAO says global food production needs to double
by 2050
in order to meet growing demand. The group says production
increases should take place mostly in developing countries, where more
than 95 percent of the projected population increase will occur..........

Standard & Poor's says ongoing high food costs will significantly increase the susceptibility of some countries to negative ratings movements.
Soaring global food prices constitute a negative exogenous shock for numerous rated sovereigns. In this review we conclude that although a food price rise in itself is unlikely to be the direct cause of negative ratings action, for many sovereigns, ongoing high food costs will significantly increase overall susceptibility to negative rating movements by exacerbating already weak external and fiscal positions, or by increasing the potential for political and social unrest...
