Washington opposes the statements of al-Maliki on setting a date for withdrawal from Iraq
The Bush administration strongly opposes the deadline for the withdrawal of U.S. forces in Iraq, numbering about 150 thousand troops arguing that this would be in the interest of extremist groups.
Al-Maliki told Arab ambassadors during an official visit to the Emirates on Monday that the Iraqi government is now looking forward to the need to end the foreign presence on Iraqi territory and the restoration of full sovereignty.
He added that the current trend is to reach an agreement on a memorandum of understanding covering the departure of foreign forces from Iraq or memorandum of understanding to set a timetable for troop withdrawal.
The negotiations on the Convention passed by periods of tension At one stage, al-Maliki said they reached an impasse. The retreat later on that position and the two sides said that progress has been made.
Jondro said Tuesday that the two sides are striving to reach the convention by the end of July.
He added, "But the most important thing is that we respect the sovereignty of the Convention on Iraq and give U.S. forces protection and authorities they need to be able to support the Government of Iraq."
