Erdogan's visit to Iraq 'historic' - al-Maliki BAGHDAD, July 10 (VOI) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Thursday described the visit of his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iraq as "historic," noting that it will open new horizons for cooperation between the two countries.

"We consider the visit of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as historic, and it is the first visit in 18 years," al-Maliki said at a press conference with Erdogan in Baghdad.
"The visit opened new horizons for relations between Iraq and Turkey who has deep-rooted relations in various domains," al-Maliki added.
"We face joint challenges, such as combatting terrorism," he continued.
"Our successes in facing terrorism have made us more prepared to move on to the reconstruction stage," he also said.
Erdogan arrived in Baghdad today in a visit, the first for a Turkish premier since 1990.
The official spokesman for the Iraqi government had said earlier that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will arrive in Baghdad on Thursday morning leading a high-level delegation to announce the establishment of a higher council for strategic cooperation between the two countries.



Erdogan arrives in Baghdad
BAGHDAD, July 10 (VOI) - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Baghdad on Thursday, the first visit of a Turkish premier since 1990.

"Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki received Erdogan at the Baghdad international airport," Yassin al-Majid, the media adviser of al-Maliki, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq (VOI).
"The two officials held a meeting at the Iraqi government headquarters to discuss means to bolster bilateral relations," he added.
The official spokesman for the Iraqi government had said earlier that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will arrive in Baghdad on Thursday morning leading a high-level delegation to announce the establishment of a higher council for strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Iraqi Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi said yesterday that the visit will witness signing a strategic agreement between Iraq and Turkey in political, diplomatic, cultural and economic fields as well as the security issues.




Turkish PM in Baghdad to discuss strategic cooperation - spokesman
BAGHDAD, July 10 (VOI) - The official spokesman for the Iraqi government said that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will arrive in Baghdad on Thursday morning leading a high-level delegation to announce the establishment of a higher council for strategic cooperation between the two countries.


"Official talks will be held during Erdogan's visit between the two sides to announce the establishment of a higher council for strategic cooperation between Iraq and Turkey," Ali al-Dabagh told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).
"Erdogan will meet with his Iraqi counterpart Nouri al-Maliki and President Jalal Talabani and his two deputies Adel Abdul Mahdi and Tareq al-Hashemi," he added.
"The new council will boost political, diplomatic, cultural, economic and military relations between the two countries," al-Dabagh noted.
"A high-profile ministerial delegation will accompany Erdogan on his visit, including ministers of interior, foreign affairs, trade, investment, and energy," al-Dabagh also said.
Erdogan's visit is the first by a Turkish premier to the Iraqi capital since 1990.

Turkish PM visit-details Empty Kurds optimistic due to Erdogan's visit

BAGHDAD, July 10 (VOI) - Two Kurdish lawmakers voiced optimism regarding Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Iraq, noting that the visit aims at boosting bilateral relations between the two countries.




"Erdogan's visit will develop the commercial and economic relations between the two countries by establishing a higher council for strategic cooperation," Mahmoud Othman, MP from the Kurdistan Coalition, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).
"The trade volume will increase to $5 billion in addition to activating the already formed committees between them," Othman added.
The official spokesman for the Iraqi government had said earlier that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will arrive in Baghdad on Thursday morning leading a high-level delegation to announce the establishment of a higher council for strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Othman ruled out any joint solutions between the two sides on security issues, mainly the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) issue, saying "I believe there will be no positive development in the PKK issue and the Turkish shelling to Iraq's Kurdistan region.
For his part, Head of the Kurdistan Coalition, 55 seats in the parliament, Fouad Maasoum told the VOI "the visit will boost Iraqi-Turkish relations in addition to signing a number of agreements between the two sides
