Nations race for valuable stake in Artic seabed

EDMUND ROY: A century ago, a great obsession of explorers was to defy nature and reach the North and South Poles.

Now the interest in the icy ends of the earth is rising once more, only this time the focus is on what lies under the Arctic sea - or the Ocean I should say.

The prospect of enormous reserves of oil and gas, in particular, has fuelled a race among nations to stake their claim on that seabed.

From Moscow, correspondent Scott Bevan reports.

SCOTT BEVAN: It may be one of the coldest places on earth, but lately the Arctic has been sending countries’ and businesses’ temperatures soaring. And it's been evident to Lev Merklin from the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology in Moscow.
