Uncaring Baghdad!
Vol XXXI NO. 113 Friday 11th JULY 2008
AMMAN: An
international think tank slammed the Baghdad government yesterday for
what it called a lack of generosity towards millions of Iraqis who have
fled the conflict in their country over the past five years.
"The
Iraqi government deserves no praise. Flush with oil money, it has been
conspicuously ungenerous toward its citizens stranded abroad," the
International Crisis Group said.
The Brussels-based group's
report on 'Failed Responsibility: Iraqi Refugees in Syria, Jordan and
Lebanon' also urged Iraq's neighbours to do more.
"The Iraqi
government should assume its responsibilities toward citizens turned
refugees by stepping up direct and indirect support, providing a
mechanism to support refugees willing to return," the report said.
According
to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, some 4.7 million Iraqis have
been uprooted since the US-led 2003 invasion, with more than two
million now living in neighbouring states such as Syria and Jordan.
Both
Syria and Jordan have repeatedly complained that the influx was
stretching their resources and appealed for international assistance.
"Iraq's
refugee crisis ranks as the world's second in terms of numbers,
preceded only by Afghanistan and ahead of Sudan," the director of the
group's Syria and Lebanon project, Peter Harling, said.
The
report also criticised Western nations including the US "which, while
contributing more than most, has admitted few refugees and provided far
less assistance than needed."
