BAGHDAD,
July 13 (VOI) – A total of $3 billion has been allocated from the
2008 supplementary budget to subsidize ration card items, a member of
the parliamentary financial committee said on Sunday.

"The
supplementary budget contained significant points, which the
Parliament has already approved, including an allocation of $2.8-3.5
billion to subsidize ration card items, in addition to another $500
million for the Ministry of Electricity," MP Alaa al-Sadoun told
Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).
"We
have not yet received the supplementary budget from the cabinet,
maybe for administrative reasons. But we obtained a copy from the
Ministry of Finance and found it a good one," Sadoun noted.
Sadoun,
who is a member of the Sunni Iraqi Accordance Front (IAF) with 39
seats in the 275-member parliament, said that the budget is expected
to reach the Parliament this week, predicting a parliamentary
approval in the coming few days.
Iraq's
budget for the year 2008 is estimated at $48 billion. The Iraqi
Parliament is expected to vote soon on a supplementary budget of $21
billion, which has been approved by the cabinet, bringing the total
for this year's budget to $70 billion, the largest in the country's
history.
The
Iraqi government has been distributing subsidized ration card items
since the 1991 invasion of Kuwait and the subsequent imposition of
international sanctions.
