Kuwait to name ambassador to Iraq - KUNA
BAGHDAD, July 10 (VOI) - A Kuwaiti foreign official said on Thursday his country was planning to name an ambasador to Iraq because security had improved enough to allow an embassy to reopen.
The announcement marks the first reopening of a Kuwaiti Embassy in Iraq after years of separation between the two neighboring oil-rich countries as a result of strained relations following Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait in 1990.
"The step coincided with similar announcements from Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates," Kuwaiti News Agency (KUNA) cited Deputy Foreign Minister Khalid al-Jarallah as saying.
The announcement follows a flurry of diplomatic activity from other Gulf Arab states. Jordan's King Abdullah is also expected to visit Baghdad soon.
No Arab ambassador has been stationed in Iraq since Egypt's envoy was kidnapped and killed shortly after arriving in 2005.
The Kuwaiti official expected "the Kuwaiti Embassy to Iraq to be based in the Green Zone."
The U.S-fortified zone houses the U.S. and U.K. Embassies in Iraq and most Iraqi government offices.
